Mounting potentiometers on a Eurorack Control Deck

N8 Eurorack Control Decks provide a Jack-Pot-Switch (JPS ) cell matrix. Each JPS cell allows you to mount various components to meet your Eurorack module’s requirements. The layout of the components is matched to our pre-drilled Eurorack panels.

Each JPS cell on an N8 Eurorack Control Deck can accommodate either a 9mm Alpha RD901F-40 style pot, RV09AF-40 style trimmer, 3.5mm PJ-301M style jack, sub-miniature toggle switch or LED.

Mounting Alpha RD901F-40 style potentiometers

Alpha RD901F-40 style potentiometers are soldered to the N8 Eurorack Control Deck using the horizontal “ABC” pads and the two lug pads.

The pot’s three connections appear at the Control Deck’s edge connector, as indicated on the rear of the board. A reference guide to N8 Synth Control Deck connections can also be found here.

Top tip: It is sometimes helpful to flip the control deck, soldering the components on the rear. This will reverse the order in which pins 1-3 of the pot appear at the edge connector and on the connected N8 Eurorack Breadboard. Changing where the pot or trimmer’s connections appear on the breadboard can help lay out your design.

N8 Eurorack Control Decks provide a grid of JPS cells. Each cell can host a 3.5mm jack socket9mm potentiometerSPDT switch or LED.

If not perfectly aligned, the two supporting tabs at the front and rear of an RD901F-40 style pot could short circuit pins 1 & 2 through contact with the pads used to mount 3.5mm jack sockets.

It is recommended that these tabs be bent up under the pot’s body, providing clearance to the unused pads below. 

Mounting 9mm RV09AF-40 Style Trimmer Pots

9mm trimmers are soldered to the Eurorack Control Deck using the horizontal “ABC” pads and the two lug pads. 

As with the 9mm Alpha style pots, the “D-Bus” can be used as a common ground connection for the control deck. The vertical “ABC” pads are then used to connect one of the trimmer’s pins to the “D-Bus”.

The trimmer’s three connections appear at the control deck’s edge connector, as indicated on the rear of the board. A reference guide to N8 Synth Control Deck connections can also be found here.

N8 pre-drilled Eurorack Panels have 7mm diameter holes to accept a range of components in each position. This provides plenty of clearance for a trimmer with a 6mm shaft. 

For perfect alignment, position the trimmer and other components on your N8 Eurorack Control Deck and affix the panel using the bolt-in components before soldering.

Check that your trimmers are square to the Control Deck and centred in the holes, adjust as needed before soldering into position.
